Excerpt from australiaforum.com:
Generally, one can only ever get a working holiday maker visa once, but if the holder undertakes 88 days of specified work in regional Australia they become eligible for a second visa and this is where some abuse has been detected.
“The second working holiday visa initiative helps encourage working holiday visa holders to get out of the big cities and spend some time working in other parts of Australia. It also helps businesses that are making an important contribution to the Australian economy to have the workers they need to run their business, particularly in seasonal peaks,” said a spokesman for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).
But now those doing specified work will need to make sure that they have pay slips that cover each day of work when they submit their application for a second working holiday visa.
Electronic copies of applicants’ pay slips can be uploaded as attachments to online second working holiday visa applications or hardcopies can be provided with a paper application.
“People should not be afraid to ask their employer for pay slips, it is a legal right and a pay slip has to contain certain information,” said the DIBP spokesman.
The spokesman also explained that voluntary work does not count towards the 88 days needed for the second holiday visa.
“We know that some groups, like Willing Workers on Organic Farms, promote themselves to working holiday visa holders. If you’d like to volunteer some of your time to help out doing activities that count as specified work, you can, but you won’t be able to count it towards your 88 days specified work if it started after the 31 August, said the DIBP spokesman. “If you started the volunteer work before 31 August, you will be able to count all days worked on the placement, even if you finish up after 31 August. If you finished volunteer work before 31 August that counts as specified work, you can include these days towards your 88 days.”
Australiaforum.com reports that a new free mobile app has been launched in Australia that allows visa holders to check their visa information anywhere, anytime, available for Android and Apple devices.
The myVEVO app aims to make it easier for visa holders to check their study and working rights, for travellers to access important information and for all visa holders to protect themselves for unscrupulous job offers and fraud.
According to Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Michaelia Cash, the app offers a range of benefits such as the ability for visa holders to access important visa information, including their visa start and expiry dates, visa status and visa conditions.
“The myVEVO app will be incredibly helpful for not only the visa holders themselves, but also for employers who seek to verify work right entitlements quickly and easily,” said Cash, adding that one feature that will greatly assist employers is a function where an email is automatically generated to a third party from the Department, providing legitimate evidence of someone’s visa conditions and how many hours they are permitted work. Given the widespread use of smartphones in today’s age, the myVEVO app is an appropriate tool for quick and easy verification of a visa holder’s work rights. Students can use the app to check their study rights and email visa details directly to their education provider while work and holiday visa holders can confirm with an employer their ability to work with ease, said Cash.
She pointed out that the app is another way visa holders can protect themselves from unscrupulous operators, including labour hire companies who have misrepresented clients in the past by providing false information about visa entitlements and charging inappropriate fees.
It also complements the existing Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) service that can be accessed on the Department’s website. The app also stores a user’s visa and passport credentials after the first login, making it simpler and faster to use.
