Qualified in Canada? Get qualifiied in Australia

Just as in Canada, there are many occupations in Australia that will require qualifications. It is a good idea for backpackers to research the jobs they might want to undertake before coming to Australia and potentially organise the completion of courses in advance. Some examples are listed below.

  • Construction: A white card or Construction Induction Card (CIC) is needed before individuals can work on a construction site. You must complete a general construction induction training with a registered training organisation. You can use a construction card that you have gained in one state to work in another.
  • Lifeguarding and Swim Instruction: When summer rolls around, all you want to do is be by the water. Australia has a need of Lifeguards and Swim Instructors throughout the year but particularly over summer. Backpackers should check out Pool Lifeguard or swim instructor qualifications. You can also volunteer with Surf Lifesaving Australia, one of the largest volunteer movements of its kind.
  • Bar Work: A responsible Service of Alcohol course is required in order to work in an occupation that serves alcohol.
  •  Working with Children: You can work with children in Australia as an Au Pair, in a childcare centre or after school care program. If you are a qualified teacher, you may be able to secure casual work as a teacher. In Australian states, you may have to complete a Background check in order to be eligible to work with children.

Remember to research jobs and their qualifications to determine whether or not you will be able to work in your chosen job.
